Alleged Rejection of Vehicle Loan by Senators

It was revealed yesterday by the chairman, Senate Services Committee, Ibrahim Gobir, that the upper chamber purchased 36 Toyota Land Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) at N36.5m each, instead of 109 cars. The senator denied collecting car loans last year, and said the vehicles were purchased from funds allocated in the 2015 budget.
He said, “We are supposed to buy 109 cars but because of the paucity of funds, because of our sensitivity to the lack of funds, we bought 36. There is no minister that hasn’t got three cars; there is no director that hasn’t got a Land Cruiser and there is no permanent secretary that hasn’t cars,”
When he was asked on when they would purchase the remaining 72 cars, he said, “Currently, we have money for 36 cars and we have paid for them.”

It is reported that some senators confirmed receiving car loans last year and when one was contacted yesterday, he criticized Gobir’s comment on the vehicle loan, saying, “It is not true that we rejected our car loans. Go and check our pay slips, you will see deduction of the car loans on it.”
People have been commending the Senators on the supposed rejection of the car loan but there is still doubt in the minds of Nigerians as to the report from Gobir. I feel that if the money used was from the budget allocated last year, why are most of the senators insisting that there was a deduction for car loans on their pay slip? If this is so, where did the money collected go to?
