After gaining admission to a Tertiary institution, a lot of students (Freshers or Jambites as they are popularly called in Nigeria) feel enthusiastic and “On Top of The World”. Most of the time, this joy of gaining admission prevents them from giving full focus to lectures when they resume.
In the first semester, most of these students come for lectures early, so as to get a good seat, carry out assignments and buy reading materials. While some do not attend classes regularly, but come once in awhile, getting updates from their course mates. Then there is the group of students that do not attend lectures at all, but come when a test is organised by the lecturer.
At the end of the first semester, when results are released, at least 25% of students perform excellently, 55% of students perform averagely, and 20% have slightly below average results. On seeing this performance, a lot of students decide to buckle up and make a better performance in the second semester, after all, your first year should have a strong foundation. The cause of below average results in Tertiary institutions is due to the fact that some students fail to build a strong G.P. while in their first and second year.
Therefore, to ensure that at the end of your stay in the university, you have an above average result, kindly note the steps below.
- Attend Lectures Regularly: Most students do not feel the need to attend lectures, especially in a situation where a lecturer has distributed the course material for the semester. These students fail to understand that being present in a lecture is one of the most important parts of achieving success. Aside the fact that most lecturers take attendance seriously, students also have the opportunity to learn more about a course while the lecture is ongoing. Most lecturers omit some important information in their course material and only speak about these during the class session. So therefore, attending lecture gives the student an upper hand when tests and final exams approach.
- Join a Study Group: In Tertiary institutions, there are always various study groups present in a department. This is a group of students who come together to tutor themselves or invite someone in a higher level who has more knowledge about a course to tutor them. This allows the students to develop more interest in a course and have efficient knowledge of it. They have the opportunity to share ideas, ask questions and look for solution to difficult problems.
- Keep in Contact with Active Students: A young man who was awarded overall best student when asked to give a speech said “I didn't get to where I am by my power, but from the assistance of those around me.” Associate with students who are active in school activities. This is so that when you are in need of academic assistance, a material or a favour, you can turn to them.
The last and most important step is to Pray always. Pray for success, wisdom, understanding and the grace of God. Once these steps are kept, success is assured.
Cheers!
